Kranskop Tannat

Kranskop Tannat is a bold and distinctive red wine, showcasing the unique character of this lesser-known grape variety. Originating from the rugged vineyards of South Africa’s Langeberg Mountains, this wine captures the intensity and richness that Tannat is known for. In the glass, it reveals a deep, almost inky purple hue, with aromas of ripe dark fruits, blackcurrant, and a hint of earthy spice.

On the palate, Kranskop Tannat offers robust flavours of blackberry, plum, and dark cherry, layered with complex notes of tobacco, leather, and a touch of black pepper. The tannins are firm but finely integrated, giving the wine a strong structure and a long, memorable finish with whispers of dark chocolate and oak.

Known for its aging potential, this Tannat only improves with time, allowing its bold flavours to soften and evolve. It pairs beautifully with rich, savoury dishes such as slow-cooked beef stews, braised lamb, or barbecued meats. Its intensity also complements aged cheeses like Gouda or Roquefort.

Perfect for wine enthusiasts looking to explore a robust, character-driven red, Kranskop Tannat delivers a powerful yet balanced experience that lingers long after the last sip.

Welbedacht – Merlot

Welbedacht – Merlot has massive vine concentration of sweet strawberries, ripe red cherries and concentrated blackcurrant confiture and this renders mysteriously. The result is an infusion of aromatic tobacco, fresh liquorice, spicy cloves and dark chocolate.

It’s fascinating to learn about the origins of Welbedacht and the Welbedacht – Merlot. It stems from the farm Driefontein and its acquisition by the Burger family in 1997. The requirement for all wine to be grown, made, and bottled on the Welbedacht Wine Estate underscores a commitment to quality and authenticity.

The farm is located in Wellington with much historical significance, dating back to 1698. Its recognition as the best wine region in South Africa in 2010 highlight the region’s importance in the country’s winemaking industry. The proximity of Wellington to Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most visited tourist destinations, likely contributes to the accessibility and popularity of the wines produced in the region.

Also unique to the cellar is the large pre-cooling area where red and white cultivars are cooled so that we can have cold maturation which enhances extraction of colour and flavour of the wines.

The family owns and manages the farm and prides itself in great wines made on the vineyard.

Overall, the story of Welbedacht – Merlot reflects the heritage and craftsmanship. This defines South Africa’s winemaking tradition.

Zorgvliet – Petit Verdot epitomizes the surging popularity of this grape, a trend gaining momentum recently. Known for its tightly packed, dark-skinned grapes, Petit Verdot thrives in Simonsberg’s sun-soaked mountain soils, resulting in an elegant, impeccably balanced wine with enticing aromas of spiced dark plum and prune.

Nestled in Stellenbosch’s Banghoek Valley, the vineyards sit at an elevation of 300-350 meters, mostly facing south. Moderate temperatures and slow ripening characterize the grape growth. The soil, a mix of leached, decomposed granite, and sandstone, imparts a unique terroir. The presence of gravel in the upper layers contributes to effective drainage, ensuring water permeates the soil efficiently, while simultaneously, the clay in the subsoil acts as a moisture retainer, safeguarding essential water content.

This wines allure lies in the deliberate vineyard curation. The gradual ripening process coupled with the mountainous influence yields a wine of sophistication. The Banghoek Valley’s distinctive terroir, meticulously managed, contributes to the wine’s character. The gravel and clay elements ensure resilience during varying weather conditions.

The careful balance in the vineyard manifests in this wine, where each sip unravels layers of complexity. This wine authentically mirrors the unique attributes of the Banghoek Valley, showcasing the rich potential of Petit Verdot in the South African terroir. With nuances of flavour and a narrative of meticulous care, Zorgvliet – Petit Verdot invites enthusiasts to savour its distinctive charm, standing out in the realm of winemaking with a depth that captivates and entices

The craft of viticulture of Zonnebloem – Merlot

Isabel Habets, the viticulturist, meticulously selects grapes from trellised, dryland vineyards in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch Kloof, and Jonkershoek. Positioned south-west facing, these vineyards maximize cooling maritime breezes, crucial for slow grape ripening and concentrated flavours.

THE CRAFT OF VINICULTURE

Transitioning to winemaker Bonny van Niekerk’s guidance, grapes are hand-harvested in March at 24° to 26° Balling. This ensures optimal ripeness with firm berries and skins. Each vineyard block undergoes a distinct treatment during a 10 to 12-day skin fermentation at 27°C. Gentle pressing at 5˚ Balling prevents harsh tannin extraction. Post-malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for 12 months in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels, enhancing its complexity.

THE WINE

The resulting wine boasts a captivating ruby red color, a bouquet blending red fruit, mulberry aromas, and subtle notes of cigar box and oak spice. On the palate, it’s an elegant, medium- to full-bodied wine with seamlessly integrated wood flavors, accessible tannins, and a satisfying finish.

FOOD PAIRING

Zonnebloem – Merlot is versatile, pairing well with rich oxtail stews, chicken curries, game, and red meat dishes. Enjoy it on its own or enhance your dining experience with these delightful pairings.

VEGAN-FRIENDLY APPEAL

In addition to exceptional craftsmanship, Zonnebloem – Merlot is vegan-friendly. This commitment adds an inclusive touch, broadening the accessibility of these high-quality wines.
