Welbedacht – Merlot
Welbedacht – Merlot has massive vine concentration of sweet strawberries, ripe red cherries and concentrated blackcurrant confiture and this renders mysteriously. The result is an infusion of aromatic tobacco, fresh liquorice, spicy cloves and dark chocolate.
It’s fascinating to learn about the origins of Welbedacht and the Welbedacht – Merlot. It stems from the farm Driefontein and its acquisition by the Burger family in 1997. The requirement for all wine to be grown, made, and bottled on the Welbedacht Wine Estate underscores a commitment to quality and authenticity.
The farm is located in Wellington with much historical significance, dating back to 1698. Its recognition as the best wine region in South Africa in 2010 highlight the region’s importance in the country’s winemaking industry. The proximity of Wellington to Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most visited tourist destinations, likely contributes to the accessibility and popularity of the wines produced in the region.
Also unique to the cellar is the large pre-cooling area where red and white cultivars are cooled so that we can have cold maturation which enhances extraction of colour and flavour of the wines.
The family owns and manages the farm and prides itself in great wines made on the vineyard.
Overall, the story of Welbedacht – Merlot reflects the heritage and craftsmanship. This defines South Africa’s winemaking tradition.
