BLANKbottle – Rabbits Foot
High-Altitude Grapes
BLANKbottle’s Rabbits Foot wine originates from grapes grown high on the Helderberg mountain in Stellenbosch. The vineyard’s elevated position contributes to the unique characteristics of these grapes. The owner of this vineyard uses a distinctive technique to produce a sweet wine.
Innovative Winemaking Technique
The technique involves pinching the stems of the grape bunches while they are still on the vine. This method allows the grapes to remain on the vine and dry naturally. As a result, the grapes develop concentrated flavors ideal for sweet wine production. However, this process comes with its own set of challenges.
The Baboons’ Challenge
Unfortunately, the vineyard faces an unusual problem: baboons from the mountain frequently raid it. These baboons feast on the top part of the vineyard, posing a significant threat to the grapes. To protect his precious sweet wine grapes, the vineyard owner devised a clever solution.
A Clever Solution
The vineyard owner decided to create a buffer zone to outsmart the baboons. He allocated the top part of the vineyard to me, allowing me to cultivate grapes there. This area, situated on the flat top section, fools the baboons into thinking there are no grapes left on the bottom slope. This ingenious plan has proven to be highly effective, much to my delight.
Limited Production
Due to the vineyard’s unique situation, the production of Rabbits Foot is limited. I can only obtain a small quantity of grapes from this area, resulting in about 835 bottles of wine. The limited availability of Rabbits Foot adds to its exclusivity and appeal.
Exclusive and Delightful
Overall, BLANKbottle’s Rabbits Foot is a product of innovative techniques and clever problem-solving. The high-altitude grapes, unique drying process, and effective baboon deterrent all contribute to its distinct character. Despite the challenges, the result is a delightful, limited-production wine that offers a truly unique tasting experience. Whether enjoyed for its story or its flavor, Rabbits Foot stands out as a remarkable addition to any wine collection.
